Getting Bigger!

June 30, 2008

The puppies are getting big! They are eating two solid meals a day now. One meal is canned chicken/rice mixed with softened puppy food. The other is just the softened puppy food. They are getting the hang of this chewing thing pretty quickly! :) By Friday I will be feeding them only somewhat softened food.

They are moving out to the large 10 foot by 10 foot kennel this week. They will start going out part of the day tomorrow and work up to all day. Now that they want to play and investigate more, the whelping box just isn’t big enough for them.

Feeding them pieces of softened food.

“Auntie” Liesl is showing Green Collar Male all about “the ball”. Green Collar Male is my most outgoing of the bunch. Very happy and always wagging his tail. Not at all bothered by things. The first one to come to you when you call. He still cocks his head at me and looks at me right in my eyes when I am talking to him. A very smart boy.

Green Collar Male is not quite ready for a game of fetch. But it won’t be long! :)

Orange Collar Male getting introduced to the smell of horses. All the puppies have been out a couple times to smell the horses and get familiar with them. Orange Collar Male is the sweetie of the litter. The quietest and most unassuming. When you say “hey” to him and reach out, he will gently start wagging his tail and sidle up to you in the sweetest way you could imagine. He loves to sit quietly in my arms while I am sitting or walking around………..just taking in everything that is going on in a calm and very grown up way.

My sister was up for the weekend to finally meet her goddaughter, Daisy Collar Female. My sister has especially spoiled this little girl by giving her the special daisy collar for her tiny puppy stage. This visit she brought a very girlie, pink collar for her going away collar. She also brought puppy bones to chew on, and a scary looking chew toy. :) Daisy girl is such a cutie. She reminds me so much of her mother when she was a puppy. I purchased Vreni from a breeder out in Colorado. So I had her shipped by plane to the airport near where I live. I remember when I opened the crate after Vreni’s long plane flight…………….all Vreni wanted to do was wag her little tail and give sweet puppy kisses. She wasn’t scared at all from the flight, only happy to see someone! Vreni has always been a very people oriented dog. She loves everyone and is always a happy girl. Daisy Collar Female is just the same way. When I pick her up she will wag that little tail of hers until it is a blur while she gives you kisses on your face!

Yesterday “The Hulk” came up to me while I was playing with them outside, looked in my eyes and started gently licking my feet. He kept looking at me while he was licking and the sweet expression on his face was just priceless!

I am sorry to say that I didn’t get any photos of Red Collar Male this time around. He is now the same size as Blue Collar Male. Red guy is going to be a royal German Shepherd when he grows up. He has a presence about him that already gives you the feeling of what a magnificent and grand dog he is going to grow into. He is also a snuggler. :)

Three Weeks Old

June 27, 2008

Well, they are three weeks old now! Still growing and becoming more individual every day.

Next week they move outside to the kennels. I think they are getting ready to have more space to romp and play in.

They also got introduced to water this week. Very cute to see these little ones lapping up water like a regular dog!

Weights this morning were:

Blue Collar Male: 4 pounds, 8.3 ounces

Red Collar Male: 4 pounds, 4.6 ounces

Daisy Collar Female: 3 pounds, 15.6 ounces

Green Collar male: 4 pounds, 3.6 ounces

Orange Collar Male: 3 pounds, 15.6 ounces

Enjoying their puppy food! Didn’t take them long to figure out the whole eating thing. :) They clean the plate and look for more. They will soon go to two solid meals a day.

“Auntie” Liesl really enjoys spending time with the puppies. She likes to babysit them in the whelping box while Vreni is out taking a break.

Blue Collar Male. What a teddy bear of a guy! This guys still seems to be the “boss” of the litter. He knows what he wants and usually figures out how to get it.

Daisy Collar Female. One can’t really imagine anything cuter than this!

Green Collar Male. This guy has come out more this week. Although still reminding me alot of Robey in that he is easy going and doesn’t get bothered by things, I do think he is more of an outgoing guy than Robey. Robey was a more shy and reserved as a puppy.

Orange Collar Male is now reminding me more of Robey in that he is easy going, along with being more quiet and laid back.

Red Collar Male figured out how to stay cool on a hot Summer day…………….lay with his tummy in the water bowl. :) Very smart little guy.

The Puppies’ 3rd Week Begins!

June 23, 2008

A lot of maturing has happened in the last week with these guys.

They now know their mom is coming not just by smell, but by sight and sound.

They don’t just eat and sleep anymore. There is more investigating when I get them out of the whelping box and into new surroundings. They play with each other. These guys are still so tiny……………..it makes their play so cute! Really gentle and slow.

Since they are now interacting more, I am starting to see their different personalities come out more and more. I expect to learn a lot about them personality wise in this upcoming week. I personality test them at six weeks old. It is a simple test that takes about 15 minutes per puppy and you get a general idea of where they are as far as dominance, independence, and such by how they react to different situations. I have guesses already as to how each of them is…………it is always fun to see how they mature and how right I was from my early on evaluations! :)

Today they will get their first solid meal!

They were wormed for the first time on Friday. It is a gentle wormer that is banana flavored, and the puppies really like it! :)

The teeth are coming in! And so marks the beginning of Vreni being REALLY glad that she can escape them when she wants to. :)

Their weights as of this morning were…………..

Blue Collar Male: 3 pounds, 14.5 ounces

Red Collar Male: 3 pounds, 11.1 ounces

Daisy Collar Female: 3 pounds, 5.2 ounces

Green Collar Male: 3 pounds, 7.8 ounces

Orange Collar Male: 3 pounds, 3.4 ounces

Here is Robey checking out his little daughter.

Blue Collar Male. “The Hulk” is quite the character! He is just huge! His feet are huge, his head is huge, his tail is like a thick tree trunk! I have pegged him as the most dominant one………..but we shall see as he matures.

Red Collar Male. I haven’t figured this guy out yet. He is the most vocal about wanting to be fed. He and Blue Collar Male buddy up when they play.

Daisy Collar Female. She is a sweetie! I think she is probably going to be a pretty happy, middle of the road puppy. Does not seem dominant or at all fearful of new situations. She seems to buddy up with Orange Collar Male right now.

Green Collar Male. Ok, this little guy has been stealing my heart over the weekend! :) Both Robey and Vreni cock their heads when you talk to them (something I love, as they really look like they are having a conversation with you!) and much to my surprise this little guy was cocking his head when I was talking to him this morning! He is also the first to wag his tail. He makes the least fuss about things and is the most content when I hold him. Right now I am thinking he is the “little Robey” of the litter. But again, time will tell as he matures.

Orange Collar Male. This guy is a quiet unassuming little one. The youngest and the smallest……..not by much. But he has surprising depth. :) He was the first one to figure out how to get out of the whelping box! Usually it is the dominant one that is the first one out. Now I have to raise the end up so they can’t crawl over. This little guy might surprise me. :)

And here is the beautiful mother of all the puppies. Verena vom Adel Haus. As you can see, having five kids hasn’t diminished her beauty at all! She is such a good mom to her puppies. A calm and laid back mother dog like her really rubs off on her puppies as they mature.

Vreni Litter is Two Weeks Old

June 20, 2008

The puppies are two weeks old today.

Their eyes are all open and they are starting to hear things as their ears start to open.

They are getting more and more active this week. Walking……….yes, actually walking………around the whelping box. Vreni likes to to take breaks and rest on her bed outside the whelping box. Nice to get away from the kids from time to time! :) She still has plenty of milk to satisfy their needs, but next week I will start giving them one meal a day of semi-solid puppy food.

Here they all are! Blue on the far right, then Red, Green, Orange, and last but not least, Daisy.

Blue Collar Male in front. Red Collar Male behind. Blue (“The Hulk”) is still larger then all the rest by at least a half a pound. One huge guy!

Ok, just one more photo of Daisy Collar Female……………..among the daisies!
