Upcoming June Litter

May 24, 2008

Vreni is now about two weeks away from her due date. She has slowed down this past week with the continued growth of her tummy. She eats between 8-10 cups of high protein dog food a day. Mixed in with the dog food she gets cottage cheese, egg yolks and added supplements.

Right now I am taking Vreni’s temperature once a day. She stays very consistently at 100.5. Next week I will start taking it twice a day. One of the easiest and best indicators that puppies are imminent is a 2-4 degree temperature drop. This occurs 12-48 hours before the puppies are born.

I was going to get an x-ray done next week so that I could have a puppy count and would know when she was done having puppies on whelping day. But after some more research I found that it might harm the puppies. So I have decided to skip the x-ray and just be surprised on whelping day. I don’t want to do anything that might harm the little ones growing inside her!

Vreni getting used to the whelping box. She has taken to it quite well and is now sleeping in it every night.

All the tiny collars are out and ready! Next week I will get all the whelping supplies and emergency equipment out and ready for the big day!

Vreni and Robey Litter Due in June

May 16, 2008

Vreni is due June 5th (approximately). Even though she is still three weeks from her due date, her stomach has dropped quite a bit as this photo shows. She is now eating twice her normal amount of food. She will go to four feedings a day next week. The puppies’ organs and the individual parts of their bodies are formed. Now they start to grow inside of their mother at a tremendous rate! Bring on the food for Vreni!

In other news……………one of the puppies from the Fall 2007 litter came to visit this week. Emma is now 7 months old and is very similar to her mother Liesl in looks and personality. But she does have her father’s melting dark brown eyes——and what’s more, she sure knows how to use them! :) Liesl recognized her daughter right off and they had a fun time playing ball together.
